Spelling to Communicate (S2C™) is a motor-based approach that helps nonspeaking individuals access reliable communication by pointing to letters on a letterboard instead of relying on speech. Rather than focusing on oral communication, S2C™ teaches the purposeful motor skills needed to express thoughts through spelling. As these motor skills are practiced, the connection between the brain and body becomes stronger through the development of new neural pathways. By improving motor planning and control, many nonspeakers are able to communicate their thoughts, ideas, and knowledge more accurately and independently.

At the heart of S2C is the belief that every individual can and want to learn and communicate regardless of their perceived limitations. By presuming competence, we recognize that difficulties with speech do not reflect a person's intelligence or understanding.
